A
Active Introductions
Everyone stands in a circle. One person starts and they say their name and do an action (jumping jack; bend
down and touch toes; sticks out tongue, etc. ). The person to the right of them has to repeat that person's
name and action and then make one for themselves. You go around the whole circle this way, with everyone
repeating all the names and actions that came before them. When you get to the starting person, they do
everyone and the game ends.
Amoeba Tag
Two people are it. They hold hands and chase people, the person they catch
joins the chain by linking hands. When another person is caught they can
stay together or spilt 2 and 2 they must split even numbers and can link
together at will. This game is played till' nobody is left
Artifact Game
Each person is told ahead of time to bring ten objects with some meaning to them to meeting or special event.
When they arrive, give them a bag with a number on it, and ask them to carefully place their objects into it.
Then make sure each person gets someone else's bag. Give participants ten minutes to write down ideas
about what the person who owns the objects is like, and to try to guess who they are. It is best if you don't
do the guessing until after everyone has had their say. This would also work as an end of camp game, to see
what people have learned about each other.
B
Baby in the Air
This game is played with a large ball; each kid picks a number in the beginning
of the game the oldest child takes the ball and throws it in the air crying "baby in the air number..."
<whatever> then runs away.
The child who's # is called grabs the ball and yells freeze (he must have the ball to yell that}.
Then the child with the ball take three step toward any other child and throws the ball at that child. If he
hits the kid the child gets a B, if he misses the thrower gets a B.
When a child gets hit four times getting a letter each time baby he or she is out and so on till there is one
child who is left.
Balloon Pop
Equipment: balloon for everyone & string.
Give each participant a balloon and string (about 24" long). Tell everyone to blow up their balloon and tie the
string to their balloon and the other end to their ankle.
Object: Stomp on someone else's balloon while trying to protect your own. Whenever a balloon breaks,
everyone must stop. If it's a get acquainted game, the person whose balloon just popped tells the group who
they are.
Variation: You can use this as a trivia game - put a trivia question inside the balloon before it's blown up, and
the group has to answer the question. Keep playing until the last balloon is broken.
Balloon Train
Have the girls stand in a line like you would for the bunny hop. Each girl has a balloon and the balloon is placed
between your chest and the person in front of yours back. Object is to have the train move around the room
without the balloons falling and without use of arms and hands. If a balloon falls they must get the ball back up
trying not to let any more fall. As you can see this will take team work.
Barnyard Bedlam
Level: All Ages
Supplies: Two sets of small objects to find, each a different color. We use milk caps, one set of pink and one
set of blue, about 15 or 20 in each set. Two small bags (big enough to hold one set of objects)
1. In advance, mark off the playing area. It doesn't have to be any particular shape, but should be big enough
to allow all your girls to run around with freedom. Within those boundaries, scatter your objects to find. Be
sure you know how many you're scattering! Mix them up well, too.
2. Divide the girls into two teams. Have them pick a captain, and a barnyard animal. Give each captain a bag,
and have the group practice making their animal's noise. Assign an object color to each team.
3. At the signal, the teams run out over the playing area, searching for the objects of their color. When they
find one, they may *not* pick it up; they stand over the object and make their animal's noise until the
*captain* comes to pick it up. The captain collects the objects in her bag.
4. The first team to collect all their objects wins.
5. If you like, have the two captains re-scatter all the objects, shuffle up the teams and play again.
Bean Numbers
Equipment: Dried beans
As each person arrives, they are handed a certain # of beans (keep it small, 5 or so). Give each person the
same amount. Everyone mingles after deciding how many beans they want to keep in their right hand (this
amount is known only to them...a secret!). You may go up to anyone and guess whether they are holding an even
or odd # of beans in their right hand. If you guess correctly, you get all the beans in their hand. If you are
incorrect, they may guess the evens/odds of YOUR right hand. Anyone guessing correctly gets all the beans
the other person has in their RIGHT hand only. If both people guess incorrectly, you just move on. You can not
go back to someone you have already asked before, until you have asked every person in the room. There is a
little bit of strategy involved - how many beans to keep in your right hand for guessing, and how many to keep
in your left hand to save. You may readjust the # of beans in your hands any time in between guesses. At the
end of the get acquainted time, the person with the most beans wins.
C
Caterpillar Relay
Each team forms a line and each girl must hold onto the waist of the girl in front of her. They may stretch out
as far as possible so long as they don't separate. When the whistle blows, the girl at the back goes down on
her hands and knees and must crawl through the legs of the whole group. When she gets to the front she
jumps up, her waist gets grabbed, and the girl who is now at the back goes through. You can either do this
down to the finish line or down and back (by reaching the turning point and having all girls spin around so they
are facing back the way they came).
CHAIR-SIT GAME
Everyone gets a chair and sits in a circle. The Guider has a list of items she reads out. If any of them apply to
you, you move the appropriate number of seats clockwise.
Examples:
1. Anyone with one brother, move one seat clockwise. If you have two brothers, move two seats.
2. Anyone with black hair, move one seat clockwise.
3. Anyone who is a Spark, or has been a Spark, move two seats clockwise.
4. Anyone who lives in _____ Area move one seat clockwise.
5. Anyone over the age of 21, move one seat counterclockwise.
6. Everyone wearing brown shoes, move one seat.
7. Everyone in Guides, move one seat. etc.
The idea is to move all around the circle, and end up back where you started. It becomes fun because if you
move, but your neighbour doesn't, you sit on her lap! Sometimes, you can have three people occupying the same
chair!!
Make sure you have lots of categories so that everyone gets lots of chances to move, e.g. all Branches of
Guiding, all hair colours (at different times, of course), and so on.
D
Down, Down, Down
This game comes to us from Australia.
You start off with a tennis ball and throw the ball continuously back and forth until somebody drops the ball
when someone drops the ball you say "Down on one knee" then say the same person drops it a second time then
you say "Down on two knees" then if the same person drops the ball again you say "Down on one elbow"and
again you say "down on two elbows" and then chin and then you're out but remember you have to stay in the
position you're in to catch the ball and throw the ball.
G
Guess Who?
Level: All Ages
Time: 15-20 minutes
Equipment: Note cards, pens
Country: USA
Have everyone write down two of their goals for the future. Do not let anyone else see them. Collect all of
the goal cards. Shuffle them and pass then out to different people. Have each player read their new card out
to the group. After a card is read out, have people guess whose goals they are. If nobody has guessed after
three tries, ask for the owner of the goals to reveal identity.
H
Hula Hoop Relay
Take a hula hoop (2 is better ... they like to compete with them) Have the girls pass the hula hoop over their
bodies while their hands remained linked.
Human Twister
Equipment: Masking tape, 3X5 cards/pieces of paper of different, matching colors
As people arrive, give them 2 different colored cards/paper and 2 pieces of masking tape. Tell them to tape
the cards/paper to their body. The challenge...Line up, matching and touching their paper to someone else's of
the same color.
M
MAP SKILLS RELAY RACE
Each team has a set of 16 cards. On one side of the card is a map symbol (e.g., highway, railroad track, school. .
.). On the flip side of the card is a name (i.e., the word written out) of a _different_ symbol. Make the sets
of cards different colors to keep them straight. The first girl on each team is given a card. She has to read
the word on the flip side, run to where the rest of the cards are displayed symbol side up, and select the
proper symbol. She then exchanges the card she had for the new card and runs back. She gives her card to
the next girl in line who flips it over to read the word and repeats the process.
My Bonnie Game
Level: All Ages
Participants: Any number
Time: 5-10 Minutes
Everyone gathers in a circle (if you use chairs this makes it more comfortable). Parents and girls came all
participate in this game. We sing "My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean". Every time we sing a word that starts
with a B we either sit down, if we are standing, or stand up if we are sitting. It is a lot of breathless fun!
P
People to People
Level: Brownie/Junior
Time: 15-20 minutes
Participants: matched pairs (unlimited)
Country: Unknown
Players are paired at random plus a "caller". The person who is the "caller" gives commands which others
follow. Example: back to back, knee to knee, etc. Players match body parts (knee to knee) with their partner
until the "caller" calls "people to people. Then everyone, including the "caller" tries to find a new partner.
Whoever is left without a partner is now the "caller".
T
Torii Tag
Level: Brownies/Juniors
Participants: 6 - 18
Country: Japan
Time: 10-15 minutes
Two players form an arch, Torii, leaving enough room for the other players to pass between them. The
remaining players form a single line, holding hands with the players in front and behind them. The line circles
around the Torii once, then passes slowly under it. When the last player walks under the Torii, the line drops
hands and scatters. The two Torii players drop hands and act as taggers. If you are tagged your are out. The
last two players tagged become the new Torii.
W
WORD GAME
Equipment: 3 and 4 letter words written on the back of old business cards (So they are easy to shuffle.)
Age: Guides and up
Number: Teams of 4 or 5 girls
Each team picks a word at random from the pile of cards. Then they attend to spell out the word, using their
bodies for the letters and the other teams try to guess the word. The first team to guess correctly is the
next one to pick a word.
This game teaches cooperation at the very least. You can also have the words related to some theme;
camping, first aid, etc. It does not take very long, and the girls usually enjoy it.
